Hyoutei Gakuen
Hyoutei with over two hundred members is one of Seigaku’s
main rivals. At the top of the Hyoutei pyramid is Captain Atobe. Hyoutei
ascribes to the philosophy that one does not get a second chance if one loses,
Shishido Ryou being an exception to this rule. Hyoutei shows much of strength
in numbers and in skill, by never sending the actual regulars unless needed.
This year has not been so lucky in their endeavor towards
Nationals. They underestimated the unranked Fudoumine at the Prefectural
Tournament and lost 3-0, but managed to win fifth place in a consolation match
against St. Rudolph, 3-1. This low standing had them face Seigaku early on.
Hyoutei was eliminated from the running for Nationals in a tense match with
Seigaku coming out on top 3-2. However, because Tokyo is hosting Nationals this
year, the host city is allowed another school to enter in the Nationals
tournament. Hyoutei was the school selected (manga).
UNIFORM
Uniform (according to
anime) White, blue-grey right sleeve and left part of shirt covering left
shoulder to waist and sleeve, black collar
CHARACTERS
Atobe Keigo (3rd
year)
Atobe has short
grey-purple hair that curls upward and a mole under his right eye. The captain
of the 200+ strong Hyoutei tennis club has a huge ego, and is often heard
saying "Ore-sama no bigi na yoina," Be awed by my skills. Atobe indeed has the
skills to back up his audacious proclamation --- he is at the top of Hyoutei’s
tennis club and defeated a great opponent from Seigaku.
In his match against
Tezuka Kunimitsu of Seigaku, he demonstrated his prowess in tennis. His
perception skill, Insight, allows him to see his opponent’s weakness, which
proved useful in noting Tezuka’s shoulder as a weak point. His most famous move
is the Hametsu e no Rondo (Rondo towards Destrustion). The move involves first
smashing at the opponent’s hand to loosen their grip on their racquet knocking
it out of their hand, then smashing the return ball at now vulnerable opponent.
Atobe has also been able to adapt this move into the Hametsu e no Tango (Tango
toward Destruction) for doubles.
Akutagawa Jirou (3rd year)
Jirou has short
orange, curly hair. He can be seen sleeping the majority of the time in a
multitude of locations when not playing tennis. However, beneath the sleepy
exterior is a great volley specialist, as noted with his victory over Fuji Yuuta
in less than 15 minutes. Rikkaidai’s Marui Bunta, another volley specialist,
has proven to be an inspiration for him especially in his special move, Magic
Volley.
In his match against
Seigaku’s Fuji, Jirou’s Magic Volley appeared to be a fluke when it appeared
that he hit when “tripping.” Even with his loss, Jirou was content to able to
play tennis with an exceptional tennis player. Only in his tennis games against
an interesting opponent does Jirou really wake up and get excited.
Kabaji Munehiro
(2nd year)
Kabaji is most
probably the tallest player on the Hyoutei tennis team. He has black hair
combed upward like Momoshiro. Not one for words, he makes up for it on the
tennis courts. Despite his size, he moves rather quickly on the courts, but
still does have a limitation to his movements.. Kabaji’s strength is in his
ability mimic other players’ moves coupled with his power. His match with
Seigaku’s Kawamura Takashi is evidence of this, both had to forfeit from their
power tennis game. Off the courts, he says little, but "Usu." He’s often seen
with Atobe carrying his bags and sometimes Jirou.
Shishido Ryou (3rd
year)
Shishido at one point
had long brown hair. Currently his hair is short and covered with a blue cap
worn backward. He also had a bandage on the left side of his forehead.
Shishido has been the only exception to Hyoutei’s rule that if one loses, one
loses their spot on the regulars permanently. Earlier, Shishido had lost to
Fudoumine’s Tachibana Kippei in less than 15 minutes. Shortly, after he was
dropped from the regulars. With the help of Ootori, he has retrained himself
and defeated another Hyoutei regular Taki Haginosuke. The support of Ootori and
strangely enough Captain Atobe convinced their coach to bend the rule for him.
As a show of his sincerity to be on the regulars again, Shishido cut his hair,
one thing he had a lot of pride in. He is now a doubles partner to Ootori.
His training with
Ootori paid off in the Inui-Kaidou match. His ability to see Inui’s Scud Serve
was made easier after training to be able to see Ootori’s faster Scud Serve.
His specials, the Rising Counter Shot, and Dash helped him to secure victory
with Ootori over Seigaku. He’s been helpng Ootori in his serve’s accuracy.
Ootori Choutarou
(2nd year)
Ootori has
whitish-grey hair and is very tall. He can be seen wearing a silver cross on
chain. He is very caring as evidenced by the events leading to Shishido’s
promotion after a loss to Fudoumine’s Tachibana. He helped Shishido train to
become a better especially in the perception of very high-speed balls. Ootori
was even willing to sacrifice his spot on the regulars to let Shishido come
back. He and Shishido are doubles partners.
Ootori’s special move,
the Scud Serve, was seen in the match against Seigaku’s Inui-Kaidou. His Scud
Serve is considered one of the fastest, unreturnable serves in the tournament.
However, the serve is hindered by Ootori’s ability to accurately execute it.
Shishido has been helping him with increasing the accuracy after their match
with Seigaku.
Oshitari Yuushi
(3rd year)
Oshitari has medium
length, bluish-black hair with some layers. He wears round framed glasses,
although his vision is fine. Just like Seigaku has a tensai (prodigy),
Oshitari is Hyoutei's tensai. And like Seigaku’s Fuji, he can do the "Higuma
Otoshi," bear drop. Oshitari is paired with Mukahi Gakuto in second doubles
against Seigaku.
Oshitari during the
match against Seigaku was successful in using the Higuma Otoshi to repel
Momoshiro’s Dunk Smash. However, his inability to adapt quickly mid-game paired
with Gakuto’s stamina led to their defeat at the hands of Seigaku.
Mukahi Gakuto (3rd
year)
Gakuto has short,
chin-length reddish hair with v-cut bangs. He is very flexible and like
Seigaku’s Kikumaru Eiji is renowned for his acrobatic play (possibly even more
so). His most notable move is the Moonsault, where he jumps in the air and
returns shots from a somersault position. He is paired with Oshitari Yuushi in
second doubles in the Hyoutei vs. Seigaku matchup.
During his match
against Kikumaru-Momoshiro, Gakuto used his Moonsault and his acrobatic style of
tennis. However, due to his limited stamina and the adaptation of Kikumaru’s
play toward Momoshiro’s playing style, Gakuto and Oshitari lost to Seigaku.
Since the match, Gakuto has trained to build his increase his stamina.
Hiyoshi Wakashi
(2nd year)
Hiyoshi has honey
brown hair cut slightly like a mushroom cut. His style of tennis is based on
his family background. His family runs Kobujyutsu dojo, thus explaining his
unusual brand of tennis. He’s oftern heard saying "gekokujou," meaning to
surpass someone better than you. Because of his belief in that idea, he
enrolled at Hyoutei, where people are taken off regulars for good if they lose
(the exception: Shishido). It is said he will most likely be Hyoutei’s captain
the following year.
In the Seigaku-Hyoutei
matchup, Hiyoshi was Hyoutei’s reserve player. Many believed him to be
Hyoutei’s secret ace for determining the outcome of the matchup’s tiebreak.
However, he underestimated Seigaku’s Echizen Ryoma, and lost. During his game
with Ryoma, we were introduced to his special move, Enbutenshu (Dance Toward the
Heavens) based on Kobujyutsu..
